Frequently asked questions

Are you open to the general public?
We love a costume moment as much as the next person, but our warehouse is reserved for union and non-union production professionals. If you're working on a show, film, commercial, or any other legit project, you’re in the right place! That being said, we do host sales to the public from time to time. Keep an eye out for the next sale by signing up for our newsletter or following us on IG: @newyorkcostume.co

Who do I talk to about what’s in stock?
Give us a ring or shoot us an email. Someone from our team will help you dig into our treasure trove.

What kinds of productions do you work with?
We rent to all sorts of productions: TV, film, theater, commercials, print, music videos, student films—if you’re telling a story, we probably have a costume for it.

Do I need an appointment to visit?
Yes and no. You can plan a visit, just reach out ahead of time and we’ll get you on the calendar. We know schedules get crazy, so if you want to stop by sans appointment, call the warehouse 646-434-4518… if we are in, you are welcome!

Do you offer tours?
You are welcome to come in and see what we have built! It's just the beginning and with new pieces coming in weekly, there is always something new to discover. Civilians (those not in the industry) may look around, but are prohibited from using the ladders or handling the merchandise.

Where are you located?
19 Babcock Place, Yonkers, NY 10701. We're just a stone’s throw from the chaos of Manhattan, but with parking and room to breathe. A 12-minute walk from the Metro North Yonkers station. We have a parking lot and street parking is also around. Note street sweeping is Friday 1p-3p.

What are your hours? Do you close for holidays? Our standard hours are: Monday–Friday: 9 AM–3 PM. For holiday hours and any unexpected closures, check our Instagram or give us a call.

Is your space ADA accessible? We are ground level access with no entry stairs. Our aisles accommodate a width of 27” as is and could be adjusted for a wider vehicle. We do have one step up to the restroom. One of our costumers can help should you require assistance.

How do I open an account with you?
Easy! Fill out our Credit Application and Production Info Sheet. Once approved, you're good to go. You can find both on our Start Renting page.

What are your Rental Timeframes?

  • Weekly Rental: 7 consecutive days
  • Production Rental: 12 weeks

You can also extend your rental once—for 50% of the original rental price for an equal block of time. After that, normal rates resume.

Is there a minimum rental?
Nope. Rent one hat or a hundred gowns—totally your call.

Do you require a Certificate of Insurance (COI)?
Yes—for rentals over $5,000. The COI must name "New York Costume Company" as both the loss payee *and* additionally insured. (Yes, both. We checked.)

Do you take deposits?
If you're paying with a PO (purchase order), you're off the hook for that—just be sure to pay via check or ACH. For non-account rentals, or those paying with a credit card, we require a security deposit equal to the full rental value.

Can you hold items for me?
Yes—regarding pulls, we’ll hold pieces for up to one week, no charge. After that, a 25% restocking fee applies. Regarding post production holds, Extended holds for potential reshoots can be arranged at a reduced fee upon request.

Can I take items on memo?
Absolutely. Our approval periods let you try things on for size (literally). Here’s the breakdown:

  • Features, Episodic, Theatrical (Local): 72 hours (weekends excluded)
  • Commercials & Print: 48 hours (weekends excluded)
  • Rentals shipped in the U.S.: 8 days (consecutive days)
  • International rentals: 12 days (consecutive days)

What’s the restocking fee?

  • Within approval period: 20%
  • Up to 2 days late: 30%
  • More than 2 days late: full rental price
  • Orders canceled after being pulled: 20%
  • In-house costume pulls: $50/hr (1-hour minimum)

Can I do alterations?
We allow minor alterations, no approval needed—nothing permanent or drastic, please. No cutting, overdyeing, or irreversible aging unless you clear it with us first.

What alterations are a no-go?

  • Cutting seams or hems
  • Overdyeing or teching without permission
  • Any kind of irreversible aging
  • Basically: if it can’t be undone, don’t do it (or ask first it might be fine!)

What happens if something gets damaged or lost?
Stuff happens—we get it. But lost or damaged items are billed at up to 10× the production rental rate. In some cases, we may accept 3 similar replacement items (pending approval).

Do you carry accessories and specialty pieces?
Yes! We’ve got shoes, boots, belts, hats, bags, gloves, jewelry, and more. If it finishes a look, we probably have it.

Are items cleaned between rentals?
Kindly return freshly dry-cleaned items, on a drycleaner hanger. If anything comes back... suspiciously funky... we’ll charge a cleaning fee or be ready to show a receipt if asked.

Do you offer shipping or delivery?
We sure do—renters are responsible for all shipping costs and we can help with the logistics. We have experience using the major carriers and various freight companies, large and independent. Need to send an Uber or a courier? Go for it—we allow rideshare pickups and returns during business hours.

Can I return items by mail or courier?
Absolutely. Just make sure everything is packed up properly, labeled and you let us know it's on the way. You're responsible for making sure it arrives back safe and sound.

How do I pay you?
We accept:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • American Express
  • Discover
  • Cash via mobile apps
  • Purchase Orders (must be paid by check or ACH)

When is payment due?
Invoices are due within 30 days (unless otherwise agreed upon) and are billed out in 2 to 3 phases.

  1. We bill out invoices as soon as the memo items have been returned for the rental period (one week or 12 weeks).
  2. If the rental needs to be extended, a new invoice will be generated. Subsequent invoices can be generated should items need further extensions.
  3. Once everything is back and the project is closed, the final invoice will go out. It will include any loss & damage and cleaning assessments.

Who’s financially responsible for the rental? Whoever signs the paperwork! That person (or company) is fully responsible for all items and any associated fees, including damage or loss.
